"Board games" could be considered a "dying art".

 

I remember reading that during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy....due to the power outages.... people were playing board games to pass the time.

 

P.S. Yes, Siping is like a jail, in a sense. Expats come. Expats leave. (Except the "faith" people.). Waiting for my release. Do you have a get-out-of-jail card for me? lol

It is going to be a truly inspiring evening. Have we contacted the usual suspects, as in those certain Chinese who would be willing to teach us their art of calligraphy? Maybe Jack London or Cynthia or whoever. Fuse the pen with the quill, with the paint brush and the papyrus. Magic.

I totally support the idea. I have beautiful handwriting I am informed, but hardly get time to use it.
I attended a similar meeting in Barcelona once, also concerned with the demise of the pen, and the writing of letters.
We could do as you suggested, but one thing I liked about that meeting was that we scanned the postcards and letters into a scanner and then emailed the letters and postcards as well as actually posting them! Kind of keeps the evening interesting and nerdy!

A hands on practical evening re-introducing people to the beauty of the hand-written word

We could get everyone to write a postcard to a dear friend somewhere else in the world!

I am going mad I know, but I am on my 5th beer!
