SUMMARY:Lanterns Festival with beijing duck.
DESCRIPTION:The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the 1st luna
r month, usually in February or March in the Gregorian calendar. As ea
rly as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 25), it had become a festiva
l with great significance.\n\nThis day's important activity is watchin
g lanterns. Throughout the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), Buddhism flour
ished in China. One emperor heard that Buddhist monks would watch sari
ra, or remains from the cremation of Buddha's body, and light lanterns
to worship Buddha on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, so he order
ed to light lanterns in the imperial palace and temples to show respec
t to Buddha on this day. Later, the Buddhist rite developed into a gra
nd festival among common people and its influence expanded from the Ce
ntral Plains to the whole of China.\nTill today, the lantern festival
is still held each year around the country. Lanterns of various shapes
and sizes are hung in the streets, attracting countless visitors. Chi
ldren will hold self-made or bought lanterns to stroll with on the str
eets, extremely excited.\n\n\"Guessing lantern riddles\"is an essentia
l part of the Festival. Lantern owners write riddles on a piece of pap
er and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the ri
ddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to che
ck their answer. If they are right, they will get a little gift. The a
ctivity emerged during people's enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dyna
sty (960-1279). As riddle guessing is interesting and full of wisdom,
it has become popular among all social strata.\n\nPeople will eat yuan
xiao, or rice dumplings, on this day, so it is also called the \"Yuanx
iao Festival.\"Yuanxiao also has another name, tangyuan. It is small d
umpling balls made of glutinous rice flour with rose petals, sesame, b
ean paste, jujube paste, walnut meat, dried fruit, sugar and edible oi
l as filling. Tangyuan can be boiled, fried or steamed. It tastes swee
t and delicious. What's more, tangyuan in Chinese has a similar pronun
ciation with \"tuanyuan”, meaning reunion. So people eat them to den
ote union, harmony and happiness for the family.\n\nIn the daytime of
the Festival, performances such as a dragon lantern dance, a lion danc
e, a land boat dance, a yangge dance, walking on stilts and beating dr
ums while dancing will be staged. On the night, except for magnificent
lanterns, fireworks form a beautiful scene. Most families spare some
fireworks from the Spring Festival and let them off in the Lantern Fes
tival. Some local governments will even organize a fireworks party. On
the night when the first full moon enters the New Year, people become
really intoxicated by the imposing fireworks and bright moon in the s
ky.\n\nGaea and I always like to celebrate lantern's festival at the B
eijing Duck restaurant adjacent to Culture square. The restaurant is i
nexpensive, but also affords a great vista of culture square as firewo
rks and lanterns light up the sky, creating the perfect back drop to a
delicious meal. \nAfter the meal we always go outside and send lanter
ns up into the night sky.\nIf you want to join us, please come along.\
nThe bill for the meal will be just shared by who ever attends!\n\nFor
