For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Event Description

After last year's successful first edition, Changchun Municipal Government and Vasa Nordic Ways organise the second international Orienteering Festival at the beautiful Jingyuetan Park on 17/18 September 2011.

Orienteering is a popular global sport that requires not only speed, but also solid navigational skills. Participants need to find their way to various control points inside the forest using maps and compass.

Apart from competitions for individuals in several age categories, there will also be a student five-patrols race.

Worth mentioning is also the cooperation with the Jilin Province Education Bureau, which allows the implementation of an orienteering educational programme, open to the public and in particular to the students at Jilin University.
All information and online registration can be found on the Nordic Ways website: www.nordicways.com, or via email to
carina.qin@nordicways.com or

China's orienteering runners ready for Vasa experience
Nordic Ways - Sep 15, 2011 05:07 CEST

China's foot orienteering scene is getting all ready for the 2nd Vasa Orienteering Festival (VOF) in the Northeastern city of Changchun, Jilin Province. This weekend, over a thousand people from China and abroad are expected to take part in the Festival, spread over various categories and 2 days of competition.

Foot orienteering is a growing sport in the Middle Kingdom, and the Changchun event follows right after the national championships held in the Southwestern metropolis of Chongqing. Sweden-rooted Vasa Nordic Ways has been key to the development of the sport in China over the last 13 years, and in Changchun the future looks bright. The automotive capital of China, 7 million inhabitans, is continuing to promote itself as an outdoor sports destination. Even in the harsh winter: the 10th anniversary of Vasaloppet China, the sister of the classic Swedish cross country skiing marathon, is scheduled for 2 January 2012.

Vasa Nordic Ways and the city of Changchun are aiming to host a major international orienteering championship event within the next few years, but first the focus is on developing the sport and 'building' strong local competitors within the region. This weekend's festival will see hundreds of university students running in the magnificent Jingyuetan forest, some of them will compete for the Jilin Province University Championship. Races on Saturday and Sunday will be held over the middle distance, with the main event featuring around 75 male elite runners and 50 female elite runners. The Festival will see participants from several countries and will include a large Russian presence with runners from a.o. Vladivostok and Irkutsk.

The first start will follow the Festival's Opening Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The event arena is set up at Jingyuetan Park's main gate on Saturday, and at the Vasa Museum inside the Park on Sunday. Pre-registrations close on Thursday. Note that last-minute on-site registrations can only be accepted subject to time slots available!

On 17 & 18 September Nordic Ways Vasa organises its next event inside the magnificent Jingyuetan Park: the Vasa Orienteering Festival (VOF) already looks set to become a classic sports and fun event for young and old alike.

A few months after the successful launch in autumn 2010, Nordic Ways and the Changchun Tourism Bureau, with support of the Changchun government, agreed on a long-term cooperation for the promotion and development of the sport of orienteering in Jilin’s capital city. An additional objective is to set up a major international orienteering event within a few years.

Orienteering originated in Sweden in the late 1800s, mainly in the form of military training. Crossing through unknown land using a map and a compass rapidly grew in popularity across Scandinavia and became a civil activity as well. When compasses became more readily available, orienteering also spread to other nations (e.g. Soviet Union, Switzerland, Hungary) and continents, particularly after the end of the Second World War. The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) was established in 1961 and began to coordinate the sport at a global level. Currently, efforts are on-going to introduce a format suitable for inclusion in the programme of the Olympic Games.

The overall sport of orienteering contains four different disciplines recognised by the IOF: foot orienteering (which is the form being organised in Changchun), mountainbike orienteering, ski orienteering and trail orienteering. Focus is not only on speed, but also on navigational skills to find your way from checkpoint to checkpoint via the use of compass and maps, which are usually provided to participants right before the start of the competition to ensure fairness. Orienteering is a test for both the body and the mind.

Vasa’s upcoming event is set up in such a way that every participant can enjoy two fine days of foot orienteering inside the Jingyuetan forest. It is not only meant for those people who seek competition glory. VOF is a sports happening for all!

Further Information on the Vasa Orienteering Festival in Changchun can be found on the website of Nordic Ways (www.nordicways.com) . There is also a video about last year’s first edition. (http://www.nordicways.com/english/index.php/category-777.html) You can register for the VOF via an email to carina.qin@nordicways.com or registration@nordicways.com , or via telephone number +86 (431) 8964 5455.
