For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Astronomers believe that the Sun is about 4.6 billion years old and will keep shining for about another 7 billion years.

Everyone is welcome to watch these episodes at Grandpa's.  As in all prior showings, an enlightened discussion will take place.

Episodes twelve and thirteen are special presentations at Grandpa's not only because they are the concluding episodes of this award winning series, but because of the topics that they entail.

Episode 12, entitled "The World Set Free," explores our long history of alternative energy exploration, and the forces which have thwarted it.

The episode discusses the nature of the greenhouse effect, and the preponderance of evidence demonstrating the existence of global warming from humanity's influence.   Tyson's conclusion's takes to task the full multitude of the spurious suggestions and irrational ramblings of climate change deniers.

The episode wraps-up with a challenge for our species to rise to the occasion in ways we’ve done before, to seize a magnificent vision of the future.

Episode 13, entitled "Unafraid of the Dark" is the serious finale

The episode begins withTyson noting how the destruction of the Library of Alexandria lost much of humanity's knowledge to that point. He then contrasts on the striving for humanity to continue to discover new facts about the universe and the need to not close off further discovery.

Tyson concludes the episode and series by emphasizing Carl Sagan's message on the human condition in the vastness of the cosmos, and to encourage citizens to continue to explore and discover what else the universe has to offer.

Three of the most famous space photographs

HD version of above photo (1.7 mb)

The world's first view of Earth taken by a spacecraft from the vicinity of the Moon. The photo was transmitted to Earth by the United States Lunar Orbiter I. This crescent of the Earth was photographed August 23, 1966 at 16:35 GMT when the spacecraft was on its 16th orbit and just about to pass behind the Moon.

HD version of above photo (330 kb)

This view of the rising Earth greeted the Apollo 8 astronauts as they came from behind the Moon after the fourth nearside orbit. Earth is about five degrees above the horizon in the photo. The unnamed surface features in the foreground are near the eastern limb of the Moon as viewed from Earth. The lunar horizon is approximately 780 kilometers from the spacecraft. Width of the photographed area at the horizon is about 175 kilometers. On the Earth 240,000 miles away, the sunset terminator bisects Africa.

HD version of above photo (6.5 mb)

View of the Earth as seen by the Apollo 17 crew traveling toward the moon. This translunar coast photograph extends from the Mediterranean Sea area to the Antarctica south polar ice cap. This is the first time the Apollo trajectory made it possible to photograph the south polar ice cap. Note the heavy cloud cover in the Southern Hemisphere. Almost the entire coastline of Africa is clearly visible. The Arabian Peninsula can be seen at the northeastern edge of Africa. The large island off the coast of Africa is Madagascar. The Asian mainland is on the horizon toward the northeast.
