For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Event Description

Episodes Twelve and Thirteen (final) will be presented.  Join us as we explore the Universe together. Attend the Changchun public viewing of Cosmos: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY (2014)

Hosted by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, COSMOS will explore how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. It will bring to life never-before-told stories of the heroic quest for knowledge and transport viewers to new worlds and across the universe for a vision of the cosmos on the grandest scale.

The most profound scientific concepts will be presented with stunning clarity, uniting skepticism and wonder, and weaving rigorous science with the emotional and spiritual into a transcendent experience.

Moved to Wednesday, June 4, 7:30pm.  Episodes Seven and Eight will be presented. Wim Roeterdink (Physics Professor Jilin Univ.), has promised to attend and will have a discussion about Black Holes and Planck Units.

**  Sun/ Sol, closest star to planet Earth. The Sun is a huge mass of hot, glowing gas. The strong gravitational pull of the Sun holds Earth and the other planets in the solar system in orbit. The Sun’s light and heat influence all of the objects in the solar system and allow life to exist on Earth. Astronomers believe that the Sun is about 4.6 billion years old and will keep shining for about another 7 billion years.

 

*** The third planet in order from the Sun/Sol with an orbital period of 365.26 days, a diameter of 12,756 km/7,926 mi, and an average distance from the Sun of 149,600,000 km/93,000,000 mi.  Surrounded by an atmosphere composed primarily of nitrogen and oxygen, it is the only planet in the universe known to support life.

 

**** Capital of Jilin Province since 1954, center for China's automotive industry, with a total population of 7.6 million and an urban population of 3.53 million people.

April 22, 7:30pm.  Episodes Three and Four will be presented.  The presentation of Cosmos will be preceded by  the power of 10 segment from "Cosmic Voyage".   Wim has promised to attend and will have a discussion about Planck Units.

This color image of the Earth, dubbed 'Pale Blue Dot', was taken by Voyager 1 spacecraft  from a distance of more than 4 billion miles from Earth.  Changchun may be seen in the upper right portion of that 'Pale Blue Dot'

"The Powers of Ten" (1977), a short documentary film will be shown before Cosmos.  This nine minute film created for IBM, depicts the relative scale of the Universe and the microscopic inner universe according to an order of magnitude based on a factor of ten.  It is a fascinating film.
