For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Event Description

Educare is offering a brand new way to learn Chinese in an enjoyable series of classes. Our first trip is trip to Harbin.

We will go to the annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival .The Memorial Museum – 731 - which acts as a reminder to the world about the atrocities committed in what was Manchuria during the period leading up to and throughout the WWII era. Alternatively you could choose to visit the Tiger Zoo which contains more than 200 tigers. Our hotel will be set in the historical Modern Street or Russian Street as it is sometimes known.

The classes will teach practical Chinese from the moment we meet at the railway station. You will actually learn Chinese whilst shopping, visiting the sites or ordering dinner, lunch and breakfast.

Fee:

750RMB/850rmb (Tiger zoo) cover all the tickets fee (hotel, breakfast,), excluding dinner and lunch.

If you like to join us WITHOUT Chinese instruction, then the price will be 600RMB.If you want to choose Tiger Zoo on the second day, the price will be 700RMB!!

This is one reviewers view of the 731 museum

The Unit 731 Museum, located about 40 minutes out of Harbin's city center is by far the most impressive activity we had during our three-day winter trip. The museum is an extremely well presented, organized and English-friendly display discussing the horrors of Unit 731. The museum pulls no punches. While the graphic imagery is kept to a tasteful minimum, the audio (definitely rent this!) explains all of the horrors in detail, without being overly morbid. The part that struck me the most was the "Repentance Hall", where various letters and recordings and images given to the museum by the Japanese perpetrators were on display, showing just how guilt-ridden they were for committing such atrocities. Serious - don't miss this museum!

The museum is free if you remember to bring your passports. Otherwise it is 50RMB per person.

I wish I could go, it's just at the wrong time for me. Never the less, I think this is a wonderful idea and wish you all the best in organizing such an event.
