For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Changchun Friends

a great way to get involved

I was at Grandpas last night, having my usual drink " Brandy and water" and having a few smokes. We had a great time chatting and laughing with good friends.

later on on the evening the place started to get smoky from everyone smoking and I haven't really notice that someone was coughing.

Long story short when I went to pay my bill I notice young Derek was coughing a lot and I ask him if he was sick ? He replied no it was the smoke that was affecting him.

AT that moment it occurred to me all this time he and other people were inhaling our second hand smoke. He said to me "MEISHEI" MEISHEI"  No problem, No problem.

I went home feeling guilty and sad for not considering other people health.

Please  SMOKERS from TODAY on, Please go OUTSIDE  to SMOKE  in respect to all NON SMOKERS.

I  want to say SORRY  to EVERYONE  for not respecting your right to enjoy a SMOKE FREE environment.

This is getting to be rather an interesting discussion. Do i look sophisticated when I smoke? If so, i'll spark up another. If not, i'll simply switch to..... pipes.

But then again Richard, you are one of few that can make smoking look sophisticated.

Nicholas, your name is remarkably close to 'Nicotine' ;)

Coming from a household where my father, mother and one of my sisters used to smoke I can say the following;

Quitting smoking will have a tremendous change for the better on your life and the people around you. For one you get your sense of smell back. This might not sound like a big change, but it is. 'Goh ma, wat ruikt dat lekker!' I would hear from my sister more often after she stopped smoking. (Wow, that smells nice, complementing my mom's cooking).

My dad got an early warning from the doctor; The doctor asked if he would like to see his son grow up. Soon after quitting he got more physically active and even partook in the Canadian long-distance skating championship. Even now at 70 he can out-skate and out-ride me on the bike. Twice a week he goes mountain biking with guys 20 years his junior.

When I was young, a large percentage of my middle school children smoked but I thankfully never succumbed to peer pressure. So I don't know what it is like to quit smoking. I can say from experience it influences the people close to you. A friend of my mom's came over with her 3 year old daughter. The little girl suddenly picked-up her mothers' burning cigarette. 'I want to try!' she cried happily. My mother was scared the little thing would puke (or even burn herself) but the tots mom said 'Let her try and find out how bad it is. It's a good lesson and hopefully she would never smoke after.' The little thing put the cigarette to her lips and inhaled just as she saw her mom do many times before and blew smoke back in her face. 'See mom! I can smoke!'

What are the benefits of smoking? Are there any? Isn't it the addiction talking when you say it calms the nerves? Even the original Marlboro man said it was the biggest mistake of his life and three of the original 'Marlboro man' actors died of lung cancer. Most of us here in Changchun are smoking the local cheap ciggies. You trust the tar and nicotine levels written on the side? Studies in the States concluded the levels there were actually 20% higher. Isn't it the prime goal of these manufacturers of cigarettes to have you keep coming back for more? You are a slave to the trade.

Wouldn't you want to get your health back? Smell better? Live longer?

Summer is coming. Invest in a bike and stop smoking altogether. Go Cold-Turkey as smoking less only makes you crave it more. All this coming from a man who knows about addiction.

To steal a line from the late, great Bill Hicks (talking about New York):

People say to me 'if ya quit smoking, you'll get your sense of smell back!'

But I live in Changchun. I don't WANT my sense of smell back.
