For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Changchun Friends

a great way to get involved

I was at Grandpas last night, having my usual drink " Brandy and water" and having a few smokes. We had a great time chatting and laughing with good friends.

later on on the evening the place started to get smoky from everyone smoking and I haven't really notice that someone was coughing.

Long story short when I went to pay my bill I notice young Derek was coughing a lot and I ask him if he was sick ? He replied no it was the smoke that was affecting him.

AT that moment it occurred to me all this time he and other people were inhaling our second hand smoke. He said to me "MEISHEI" MEISHEI"  No problem, No problem.

I went home feeling guilty and sad for not considering other people health.

Please  SMOKERS from TODAY on, Please go OUTSIDE  to SMOKE  in respect to all NON SMOKERS.

I  want to say SORRY  to EVERYONE  for not respecting your right to enjoy a SMOKE FREE environment.

If the cigarette smoke at GPs doesn't get you, the Changchun air will. Will the owner, Derek, go outside too? Will the Chinese, and then there lies the question, what is Granpa's - is it a restaurant or a bar/pub? It is both I think. Last night 6 people sat at the table, only two ordered food. All the rest were smokers and drinkers and more money was made for Derek on the beers than on the food. Cigarettes compliment beer/alcohol. I'm there almost every night and it is where I go to relax after a long day. It is extremely respectful of you Pierre not only to notice young Derek's state but to try to do something about it on CCF. I applaud you and not incredulously. Having worked in the hospitality industry for over 10 years it is clear to me that this problem can be solved, it is up to old Derek to fix it, and that is only if he actually wants to. Ventilation systems, a smoking room, a non-smoking room, and cleaning up the front entrance anti-chamber and putting some seats there would be ideal. Ask Old Derek what he thinks too. Kudos Pierre, you are a very considerate bloke.

Great initiative Pierre. I think, looking at Richard's comment (Little Dick) it is difficult keeping smoke confined in one room in such a small place as Grandpa's.
I welcome anyone going outside when the need arises if only to get some fresh air ;).

What about the respects for the smokers?

I totally agrea that a restaurant shouldnt be a place where people and guests are caughing because of others smoke.

Maybe, the best way must be to not smoke all at the same time and less than usual, at a restaurant i will not smoke cigarette while i am having dinner, but we all agrea that a smoke at the end with a coffee is not an option.

In Europe the non smokers won the batlle for every public and private place, this must be good for our health , but can we try something in the middle, Non smokers could not forbide smokers and smokers make it few, respectfully.....

Respect has always both sides

Yeah, you're right about this.  We've all got to be a little less lazy and step outside.  I only smoke occasionally, but still the damage is done.  If you want to smoke indoors- go to Happy Home- or some other bar.

Not to mention, people are eating at GP too.

well said pierre. At wlc I try to keep the smoking to a specific area. That room also becomes extremely difficult to breath in after a while. Asking people to step outside at wlc is a little difficult since we're on the forth floor. At grandpas, stepping outside is relatively easy. But what if one of the smaller back rooms were also given over to smokers who for one reason or another would prefer to stay warm. Derek and Brook i'm sure want to keep everyone happy so ultimately it should be their choice:)
