For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. Changchun Friends

a great way to get involved

I know i should not think like that, i just want to abreact my mood. people are living in the same world, but they undergo different experiences in this unequal society.

I used to devote myself to prepare the TOEFL and SAT exams, sacrificed my break time to memorize the vocabulary. And then i applied to New York University, but they refused  me.

Today, a girl ,i met several years ago, called me and tell me that she will go to NYU this September. But she told me she only got 5 in IELTS. She told me that she found a boyfriend who helped her to go to that university without the language score and anything else, even no visa.

Her boyfriend is 30 years old and she is only 18, the same age with me.

WTF ! I don't know how to express my mind.

such an unequal world!

I worked hard to achieve my dream, but i cannot get.

someone can take my dream easily just for finding a thirty years old boyfriend.

I cannot accept this reality at least in my age.

Bella, Did it ever cross your mind that this person might be lying to you?  Do you have any evidence that she is actually attending NYU other than her verbal claim (i.e. showed you an acceptance letter)? I hate to tell you this, but people lie all of the time.  Aside from sex and money, status/credentials is one the things which people lie about the most.  Based on everything you have said about the situation, I suspect that she was lying to you.  The facts do not seem to add up.  Oh, she probably does have a new boyfriend, is going to New York, and is attending some school in the city, but has embellished the facts to make herself look better in the eyes of her peers (i.e. you).  Since it would not be easy for someone local like yourself to investigate her claim, she possibly believes that she can get away with her lie.

My advice: don’t worry it or other people, just keep on doing what you’re doing, because you seemingly have been successful so far.  Anyway, if you really want to go to NYU, there’s always grad school.

Now if you meet anyone who claims Johns Hopkins admission, give me a call and I’ll go out and quiz them to get the facts.

The show "Crosstalk" on CCTV covered this very subject last week and many related topics.

He spoke of overseas admissions and "Parachute kids" (Kids w/ folks w/ a lot of money who drop them off in another country) and "hai gui" (sea turtles- the students who come back to China from overseas).

The CCTV host mentioned that some provinces get more slots for prestigious college admissions than other ones. Because of this some cities in China are getting "migrant test takers"- students who show up to take the GAOKAO in another province because the college admission requirements are lower.

Unfair!

I don't know her words are real or not. But she said that her boyfriend is the chief translator in the Rockefeller Financial Group or other subsidiaries of the Rockefeller Financial Group . So with her boyfriend's help, she can go to NYU directly because that company has some cooperations with the NYU. Actually ,the thing which frustrated me is not she will go the NYU and anything else. It is that she was showing off to me, calling to tell me how wonderful the thing is. That's why I was upset.

some girls know there direction when they are pursuing their dreams, but someone are not.

Ok, whatever. I told myself that I should study hard in the future and get a better life if I think it's unfair. Come on Bella, ur the best in your heart. hahaha, I trust in you.!

Anyway, as my student I think you have real potential. Your 17, your spoken English is excellent. You're a beautiful young woman. WTF, don't be jealous of her! She's got an old man on her arm. Your boyfriend looks like he's straight from a Prada fashion show!!!
I think the west coast suits you better too!

There a couple of sayings back home for people

with unfair advantages: "born with a silver spoon

in his mouth" and "started life on third base".

Its not fair

I agree with what everybody is saying. Bella, i know this must be really frustrating for you. But it happens. Some people take shortcuts in life, and its unfair. But i feel that the ones who work hard and do things honestly will always have something to fall back on because they took the long way and obtained the tools and experiences that will always be with them. Nobody can take your hard work and your knowledge away from you and you will do great where ever you go, Bells!

If you got accepted to UCLA, then you should feel proud. It is a better academic school than NYU and it has a real campus compared to NYU which doesnt.  You'll also save money, UCLA is way cheaper than NYU.  Of course, you havent said what you intend on studying, but UCLA is a great choice!!

As for 5 in IELTS, not possible to get into any of the top 50 universities in the US.

5 in IELTS studying in NYU?? it could be deemed that the girl is only a beginner of the english language.

go to that university without the language score and anything else, even no visa.
