For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

From my own observation, they are not digging down to build a tunnel. I think they will go over rather than under- just my view!

I don't know, Dave. if I go to our FAO's office, on the 12th floor, I can look right down on Weixing Square and see the excavation. It's a rectangular hole, all concreted now, which runs with the long axis running North-South. That's the Metro Station. If they are planning an expressway tunnel, it would have to travel east-west underneath the Metro Station.

However they plan it, it's interesting and fun, to try and figure it all out. LOL

Chris, there is already a light rail tunnel close to the surface and the Metro will need to descend below that tunnel.  An expressway tunnel at the same grade as the light rail tunnel, tunneling under Weixing Square would also pass over the new Metro tunnels.    Further down the road, Qianjin Dajie is tunneling under Weixing dalu.  Metro tunnels are usually deeper so they can avoid all the infrastructure and utilities near the surface. From a planning perspective, constructing an expressway tunnel would be the right thing to do.

I would imagine that they won't knock it down until after the students are let out for the summer. They need it to be able to get back and forth to their dorms.

My FOA was the one who told me that we will be moving out by the airport in three years, and at the same time, asked me if I would be interested in still working for them at that time. Apparently, it will be a number of uni's moving out there.

Any more info on this three-year timetable for the uni's? I am quite interested in it as have heard some rumors floating about!

That's right, Matt. Three-year timetable for the uni's to move out by the airport.

It can't go underground because the Metro (subway) goes straight up Renmin Da Jie. If the expressway went underground, it would have to go through the subway.

Not so sure about the bridge, they did tunnel under for the light rail, when a bridge/viaduct would have been a cheaper and easier alternative. Renmin Dajie is an important street, dividing Changchun in half, connecting the train station and the most important government centers and institutions.  Why mar the street and the square with an ugly bridge.

Some of can speak a bit of Chinese, but that doesn't necessarily mean we can read and/or write it. Why? Is it important for this particular discussion?
