For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

In another list Tanzania is named as one of the worst. In another life I worked in Nyakato near Lake Victoria as a missionary. I lived with the poorest people and in the same conditions in a waterless corregated shack with little protection from the elements, the very dangerous insects or snakes. In the first 2 weeks there, I was in hospital 3 times with mozzy bites - they had bitten me so many times both my hands were so badly swollen my fingers looked like bananas. Each morning I woke and my first job was to clear up the dead mosquitoes I had to kill with my big cans of RAID the night before and I needed a dustpan as there were literally hundreds. All around me people were dying of AIDS and I helped bury so many - it is customary to dig your own graves there and then fill them in - we took turns with the spade.

Dysentery, malaria, malnutrition, gum disease, ulcers, boils, scorpions - the problems were endless but I never missed a class and worked around 14 hours a day and 7 days a week.

I could go on and on ...

But the Tanzanians were and still are the happiest and friendliest people I have ever met and I enjoyed my time in their hell more than any other place I have ever lived - I would never have left if my body hadn't given up but the conditions were brutal and I suffer everyday still from the damage I did then but I wouldn't exchange that time for anything.
