For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Changchun Friends

a great way to get involved

I enjoyed, for the most part, my first teaching day in China. There certainly were a few surprises, but one of them was not that I didn't have any assistants - in any of the classes. Somehow I expected that. But it was no problem. As a former substitute, before my more steady teaching job, I learned the value of having plan A, plan B, and plan B in my bag of tricks.

A bigger inconvenience was the lack of whiteboard markers. Does anyone know where one can buy those? They seem to be as rare as hen's teeth.

Hi Richard,

Just got back from Dandong. Came back 5 minutes ago on a sleeper.

How is it going Tom?

Start your own Nature/Birding group, and see if you get anyone interested.

Good advice. Expect the unexpected. With that in mind, we have been having a good time here. With all of the surprises, it is still a great plus being here. In a few hours we are off again, this timw for Shenyang, Dandong and - I'm sure - more surprises.

BTW, are there any nature or birding buffs here in this group?

Don't presume anything, then everything will be fine. Markers are as Chris said, in a lot of the bigger supermarkets.

You'll probably find that there are a "few" things that you had back home that are unavailable here.

LOL stands for "Lots of luck", right? I will try those other places. I hate that I had a dozen or more markers back home but didn't take any, figuring that they would be supplied by the school.

Try Hengkelong, Walmart, or Carrefour. Also, those little back alley bookstores that you see all over the place should carry them.

Or, you could also ask your school to buy them. LOL
