For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.
I am researching which VPN to go with. I assume that paid ones will be more reliable than freebies (Correct?). I saw an ad for Express VPN in one of these expat groups and wondered if there was any feedback on them by users here. Also I noticed that Chinoxy was also recommended here. Is there any difference between the two performance-wise? Thanks.

Your assessment sounds about right, Chris. I wondered if indeed I didn't have a Dinosaur 1000 core in a Dinosaur 2000 chassis. I will look into those things you mentioned. Thanks.
Your computer that the school supplies are basically Win 2000 machines. I even had one once that had Win 98SE still on it. They've upgraded the Win 2000 boxes to XP, but didn't U/G any of the hardware. If you actually had a look inside the box, you will probably find an old 1 GHz CPU and 512 Mb's of RAM, with an old 64Mb (128Mb if you're lucky) Video Card. If you can get on Filestube.com, look for Ghostsurf 2005. Installing that will at least allow you to go after Freegate. Ghostsurf requires some tweaking (allowed sites, etc.), but it serves its general purpose well enough. If you can't get it, PM me.
Thanks for all the input. I tried getting Free gate first, but apparently even the search for that is blocked here. Is it even worth trying? I guess I may have to consider wifi for my laptop. I hope it isn't too much.
The computer we were given is so old and slow that it is frustrating (or impossible) doing many of the things I enjoyed. I believe the XP stands for "eXPect to wait".
Freegate is the only free VPN I know that works. Almost all the people I know running paid for VPN's do well enough, unfortunately, the good ones require a VPN to buy them since the powers that be block the actual downloads here.
Chinoxy is ok for facebook, but can be unreliable.
I have a Mac, so I use a mac VPN, but you may find that when everyone comes back from their holidays (ultra-quiet website), you may get some good ideas!
