For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

New Canadian passports over twice as expensive as US and UK Passports

All I can say is ... you have GOT to be kidding!!

I have to renew mine in early 2013. I'm looking at 1000 RMB to go to Beijing, 800 for the hotel, a 1000 to come back to Changchun, 1600 RMB for the 10-year passport, and another 2800 to make the trip 10 days later to pick it up. That's 7200RMB to get a new passport.

Here's the kicker ... It would actually be cheaper to fly back to Canada, get the passport renewed, and then fly back to China!!

If you're up north here, you must go to Beijing. As well, Changchun to Beijing and back is not a day-trip. The 5-year passport is now 1200 RMB, an increase of 500 yuan.

I just renewed mine last year in Shanghai and it only cost 700rmb for a five year passport. Maybe try and do it in the day time and come back the same day to avoid hotel costs. The International Hostel is pretty good there and 120/night.

Maybe they will, I don't know. I know that when I was in Yiwu, I had to go back to the Consulate in Shanghai to pick it up. I'll have to do some further digging.

Still, they are sure dinging people for a bunch of pretty pictures. I don't think any border control person from any country is going to look at my passport and tell me how pretty the pictures are, and want more information about them.

You mean then can't send it to you via UPS.  The first I renewed in China they  returned it to me via UPS or Fed EX can't remember but I paid for the shipping at the Embassy that was 2006.
