For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Changchun Friends

a great way to get involved

THIS MIGHT BE ONE OF MY MORE THAN MANY USELESS BLOGS - BUT.

WHO ARE YOUR HEROES AND WHY?

Mine are:

Socrates (Greece) - the father of reason

Shankara (India) - the man who welded spirituality and reason together

May (China) - because she keeps my feet on the ground

I have many others but this is a starting point!

Big fan of Warren Buffett. He's one of the good guys. 90% of those

on Wall Street should be thrown in prison.

Found this on the guardians website! Should be an inspiration for all those Chinese kids struggling at school. The article is about Famous people who really "flopped" at school.

Another hero of mine - and more modern - Warren Buffet. If you go to Youtube and listen to some of his talks then it is an inspiration for ethical business practices

Two more heroes for you.

My mother and Erin Brockovich.

Education....though it is very important....isn't

everything.

I am assuming you have seen the movie (If not- see it-

Erin Brockovich is played by Julia Roberts. Its a great movie).

In the beginning Erin B. has no money, no job and no family.

But what she does have- she has in spades - GUTS.

She takes on lawyers and other corporate clowns....

does her research better then them and out performs them..

hands down. ..and wins. She takes on corrupt corporate America...and wins.

Its a true story. I used to show this movie 20 minutes a week in all

my Business English and International Trade classes. My mother's story

is much less dramatic. In her day women did not go to college (or, let's

say, not as often as today...where now more females then males attend

college) . She retired as a Senior Accountant at a non-profit organization

(a hospital) and all the kids with CPAs and Master's Degrees

worked under her.

He failed at business in '31

He was defeated for state legislature in '32

He tried another business in '33

It failed

His fiancee died in '35

He had a nervous breakdown in '36

In '43 he ran for congress and was defeated

He tried again in '48 and was defeated again.

He tried running for the senate in '55.

He lost.

The next year he ran for Vice President and lost.

In '59 he ran for the senate again and was defeated

In 1860, the man who signed his name A. Lincoln was

elected the 16th President of the United States

"The difference between history's boldest accomplishments

and its most struggling failures is often tsimly the diligent

will to persevere"
