For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

OK. I will start it off. I want to make some real meat pies with proper puff pastry or good pie pastry. Where can I get it in changchun? (ordinary pastery just does not do it!)

I actually do have a question about sending money back home.  I'll be starting a new job in Changchun and opening a bank account (hopefully).   Is it a problem wiring/sending money overseas, or is it pretty straight forward?

Michael - There should be no problem. It is quite easy. I get a Chinese friend to do it for me
Still waiting for my pie question!
Richard do you have a friend do it for you because you don't have a bank account?  Or do you have a bank account, but it's a hassle?

Michael

I have a bank account. I send money back to the Uk but it is easier to do when you have a friend here in China to help!

Lol, Ok I got it.  I have a feeling I'm gonna need one of those friends for a good deal of everything that I need to do outside my job in the first few weeks/months...

There's a bank in Changchun (I forget the name, will find out tomorrow) that some of our teachers use whereby withdrawals are free from any associated cashpoint in the world.  In the UK, for example, any Link machine works.  A duplicate cashcard is sent home to a trusted friend or family member and takes money out on your behalf and does with it what you want them to.

My students have set up a help group for ex-pats

If you are new to china, they can help you!

Go to the Groups section and look up the raffles Students group

Also - we can help on this site!l

Kyriacos, that is extremely valuable information!    I hope you can get the bank name, it would greatly help!

Great info Richard!  I'll check it out!
