For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

looking forward to the snow season and see you soon on the slopes :)
There's a skating rink next to the stadium on the north side. They even play hockey there. When it gets colder, you can skate on South Lake and the river. A couple of ski areas close by the closest being near the airport. The bigger and better one is near Ji Lin City. Hope this is helpful.
What about snowboarding? If I can get a snowboard, I will also participate. :-)
Nice idea - who is into winter sports here?
I love skiing and skating too! I hope we organize soon!1^^
Any outdoor fans here?
Wew want to hear from you!
I suppose I can weigh in here. I have skated and snowboarded at just about all the locations around the city.
Yes, once the lakes/rivers freeze there are plenty of outdoor locations to skate. If you have your own skates, it's about 5-10 rmb for unlimited skating on one of the many places, 15-25rmb if you are renting skates: Nan Hu Lake there are at least three different places cleared out for skating; near the TV Tower there is a small pond that should have skating; on the river beside the Ziyou Da Lu bridge there is often a place set aside for skating. Ironically enough, I can't really tell you that much about indoor skating. I DO know where the rinks are, but I have only ever played hockey on them, and that is fairly exclusive/by invite-only. I have seen people free skating at the BIG gymnasium north of the stadium, but I don't know the times/prices.
As for snowboarding/skiing, Lianhu Shan is the best location, just because it is SO convenient. Catch the special shuttle bus outside the stadium, between 7.30 - 8 am. All in, the price is well below 200rmb, depending on what you rent, lessons, etc... The bus leaves around 4 (don't miss it!!) and gets you back in the city by 5ish.
Beida Hu (spelling?) between here and Jilin City is a bigger, more "professional" venue, hosting high speed gondolas and longer runs. Prices for rentals are the same, but it's a little more difficult to get to. Don't even bother trying to go there in the first two weeks of January, as the China National Winter Games will be hosting their snow sports there at that time. (Ice sports in Changchun, I'll keep you posted on when/where the hockey games are)
Jinyuetan is a small, slow slope. Perfect for only the most basic of beginners. If you've gone skiing/snowboarding before, you'll find it boring and not worth the money. However, I am pretty sure there is cross country skiing available, for you more outdoorsy types.
Of course I don't need to tell people to keep warm; my advice is have a backpack with some chocolate for energy and a good thermos full of hot coffee/tea. (I also cheat by mixing some brandy in with my coffee!)
Good luck and have fun!
