For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.
How might one find out if a restaurant or eating facility is using that toxic disgusting recycled cooking oil to prepare their dishes?
I was just told by a coworker that the cafeteria I've been eating at uses it.
Can anybody give any tips on how one can be on the safer side of things here?

I have some UNUSED cooking oil (olive oil) if you want it. I am really a bad cook. I can't boil water and i would burn toast....
Agree with this. Cook at home! Or eat at places that you can trust.
Even my Chinese wife wants us to avoid eating out at the BBQ places, you truly dont know what goes on behind closed doors. Plus the news that my wife reads contains many instances of bad practices.

Suggestion - cook for yourself if you can - I cook with olive oil and buy good ingredients.
Or eat somewhere you really trust such as the World Life Club where you can good healthy reasonably priced grub.

Yup. One country's gutter oil is another country's aviation fuel. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced it will purchase 2,000 tons of gutter oil from Shanghai, and refine it into aviation fuel for its aircraft.
The Dutch national carrier, which currently uses a 50-50 mix of biofuels and fossil fuels, has said it may need as much as 120,000 tons of jet biofuels each year.
In June 2011, KLM made the world's first bio-diesel fueled flight in the world, taking 171 passengers from Amsterdam to Paris.
Last month, it made headlines again by successfully flying a Boeing 777-200 from Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro on bio-kerosene made from used cooking oil. This was the world's first long-haul biofuel flight.
Being on the cutting edge of this technology will give KLM a huge cost advantage over competitors as used cooking oil costs about 30% less than petroleum in China.
I think this is good news - less sold to restaurants!

Some people are slightly sceptical about this actually happening, kerosene/biofuel mixtures are the wave of the future. The aviation industry is now using for some commercial flights a 50/50 kerosene/biofuel mixture to reduce its carbon footprint. Here are some links for further research.

Chinese gas/oil giant SINOPEC has started processing recycled cooking oil into "biofuel"....to use as aviation fuel to power jets....
A UK spokesman said that Uptown Oil in the UK has used the recycled cooking oil turned biofuel for black London cabs and power buildings. He said hotels in Bali use biofuel.
(*so next time you see used cooking oil...yell at your waiter....and tell him to bring his old cooking oil to the local airport!)
suggest u to have the meal at home.cook for yourself.you should choose the formal and big restaurants if u have the meal outside.most of the restaurants are ok .i am not sure about the small such like MALATANG or SHAOKAO.hope everyone healthy!!
