For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Movies by Genre!

Winter is upon us and I am considering starting a movie night at World life club in Gui Lin Lu. I have a nice new HDMI TV which I think would be perfect for showing some great movies.

So I need your help, I want to compose a list of movies for each Genre. I think the main thing is that I am looking for the greatest movies ever made in each catergory.

a) Western

b) Sci-Fi

c) Action

d) Romance/Comedy

e) Period/Historic

Thanks for your help, and feel free to add a genre or 2:)

You could go with the old "Police Academy", for Comedy. I have all four if you need them.

Drama - Seabiscuiyt is also good

Drama/Thriller - Just watched House of Games by David Mamet again - superb film

Western- "High Noon" and "Good, Bad and the Ugly" (tie)

"the man from earth"
Has anyone else seen this.
I will show one of two movies on Wednesday evening - sci. Fi.
And the short list is...

Drama- Smoke

Romance/drama -Life is Beautiful

D) Big fish from Tim burton,  with Ewan McGregor and David Denman. A really nice movie with humour. Forrest gump , a movie which i watch many times but can watch it and watch it again.

E) The comedian harmonists ,directed by Joseph Vilsmaier. The Great Dictator is a comedy film by Charlie Chaplin released in October 1940 . It's really fun. For me it's real comedy cause it's a silent film. The emotions and reactions  of the public are real.

Ray Charles. This film is very moving and interesting. For those who know Ray Charles and want to know more about his life, this film is perfect (the only biography movie of Ray lol).

B) iRobot (iphone , ipad.....) . I think many people know already this movie.I think it's not real Sci-Fi ,cause we have already robots of which we are dependent , and this more and more. It can be interesting to speak also about this after this movie (of course if it is select)  "What is the real danger of technologie and what is not". What happend if internet crush down? Can we survive and live like the old generation before us?

Okay here are my picks:

Western:  True Grit (the John Wayne version) and Shane

Sci-Fi: Silent Running, 2001: A Space Odyssey

Action: Dirty Harry

Romance/Period piece: Gone with the Wind (Classic)

Comedy: The Frisco Kid (Gene Wilder and a very young Harrison Ford), Auntie Mame (Roslind Russell version), Good Neighbor Sam (Jack Lemmon), The Odd Couple (Lemmon and Walter Matthau)

Historic: Brother Sun, Sister Moon, The Kings Speech, Good Morning Vietnam, The Killing Fields

Drama:  What Dreams May Come (Robin Williams)

Musical: Sweet Charity (Shirley McLaine), Cabaret (Liza Minnelli), Fosse, White Christmas

Classic Holiday: It's a Wonderful Life (Jimmy Stewart), Miracle on 34th Street (Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O'Hara)

I know I could think of many more in each category but these are the ones that are at the top for me.

You forgot the original "Wizard of Oz"? Shame on you!!

There's also Apocalypse Now, Good Will Hunting, Platoon, and The Breakfast Club.

From the 80's: Raging Bull, Silence of the Lambs, The Shining, Tootsie, The Princess Bride, Raising Arizona, Scarface, Chariots of Fire, The Right Stuff, A Passage to India, Hope and Glory, Caddyshack, The Road Warrior, Fatal Attraction, Out of Africa, and Stand by Me.

All excellent movies.
