For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.
Hello everyone, I am in desperate need of advice, mostly because I do not know how things work in China:
You see, last night just after I was about to get off a taxi and I open the door, another car (a private one) came from behind, passing right by us, hitting and bending the door. Obviously both cars where damaged in the process, but luckily no one was…

From today until July 4th, a holiday-related quiz question will be posted everyday. The quiz master at the celebration will give a beer or two to the person or persons who correctly and/or uniquely answers the most questions first. Yes, timing is everything in this contest. Was at the train station picking up tickets for Dalian. Now, I'm used to beggars passing the queue asking for money and anywhere else I might have given some but from experience it is unwise, especially as a foreigner, to give money while queuing. When other beggars get wind that I am willing to give-up coin they will come to me like moths to a flame. And, as I am in a queue, I can't just walk away.
So in this case I decided not to give money and the poor chap…

The Turkish restaurant has gone. It wasn't that long ago it opened. It started slowly but then it quickly improved. I used it often and Thomas, Mary and I loved it there.

The people who know me, they know who I work for, and they also know the problems that other foreigners had with her in the past (She's Chinese, in her early 40's).
In the last two months everything has been going just fine, however, yesterday it took me almost an hour of arguing with her so she could pay me everything I worked for her. I won, of course, but all because I made her understand that if I don't get enough working hours it's because she hasn't provided them so…

I know i should not think like that, i just want to abreact my mood. people are living in the same world, but they undergo different experiences in this unequal society.
I used to devote myself to prepare the TOEFL and SAT exams, sacrificed my break time to memorize the vocabulary. And then i applied to New York University, but they refused me.
Today, a girl ,i met several years ago, called me and tell me that she will go to NYU this September. But she told me…

I would be much obliged if some one could translate the following note that we just discovered on our door. We have already had one surprise two weeks ago. Returning from a short trip to Mudanjiang we found we had no power - had to throw all of our food out. Our employers were supposed to take care of that.
Is this note along those same lines. I'm just so tired of being nervous over things that supposedly we weren't even supposed to have to worry about.

Following on from mahatma Jack's posting on the origins of words, this is for everyone to tell us where they are from and what the word means (And H/T to Ferney for coming up with the idea)
I will start off with England:
England’s name originally comes from the term “Land of the Angles”, which was translated to Engla Land in Old English. The Angles were an ancient Germanic (or Saxon) tribe, one of the few that occupied the region now known as England…
