For the most part, the Changchun Friends website is not very active and has been superseded by the Tencent "Wechat" app by the local expat community. This website is maintained sporadically, people may still join and membership is still open, but if you are a spammer, stay away. The archived information here is still useful, but some may be out of date. There are plans to make it more useful for static information in the future. If anyone needs information about Changchun or China, you may post a message and it probably will get a response but not immediately.

Lost in Translation II

Robert Frost said, “Poetry is what gets lost in translation.”  When something is translated, phrases tend to get rendered down, curtailed, simplified.  Still, even in translation, some new voice is asserting its own flair, knuckling its own spin into a basic meaning.

One morning earlier this week, avoiding the lessons in my Chinese text book, I stumbled onto a daily affirmation site, and I tried to translate a bit into Chinese.  I asked Mandy to check it over, and then I posted it and…

Lost in Translation

A little experiment:  I translated a daily affirmation, with a little help, into Chinese.  I hope some Chinese speakers will translate it back into English.  Then I would like to post the original with the new translations.  Please translate!

Crazy Changchun!

A question - what are the eccentric, strange, wonderful, bizarre, experiences you have had in Changchun?

To kick off......

My taxi driver got upset and stormed out of his taxi, went up to the taxi in front of us and pulled open the door and a full fist fight ensued

The lights turned to green and my taxi driver rushed…

Fin's book in Ferney's artwork.

It's surreal; it's mysteriously mind-bending; its out on Amazon with Ferney's art work: Angels, Delirium Liberty.  I REALLY need reviews!  If you would like to do one, I'll give you one of the old copies for free.

The Love of money is the root of all evil

What words come to mind when you think of this phrase:

The love of money is the root of all evil.  Greed?  Corruption? Vanity?  What about when I simply say the word money? Do those descriptors still come to mind or do you think of ways that money can be useful – payment for hard work, tool for doing good, a transfer of value.

What I do know for a fact is that it can be done in bigger cities with a much bigger expat population like Beijing or Shanghai. What I do not know is…
